The founding of our congregation dates back to 1879 when Mr. & Mrs. G. M. Roberts and Mr. & Mrs. Connell along with Rev Billy Simpkins formed Buchanan Methodist Episcopal Church of the South in the first courthouse in Haralson County.
The original church building was constructed across the southwest corner of the Courthouse Square and was lost to a fire in the Fall of 1888. A second church building was constructed and completed in 1890 on the corner of current Business 27 and Williams St., and the third and final sanctuary was built in our current location in 1908.
In 1939, the church reconciled and was renamed Buchanan Methodist Church until the merger with the United Brethren in 1963 when it became Buchanan United Methodist Church.
Construction of the educational annex and downstairs fellowship hall spanned from the mid-40s to 50s, a major remodel in 1969 saw the addition of the very first central heat and air system, and the steeple was added to the bell tower in 1986.
The neighboring Sinclair filling station on the corner of US 120 and Business 27 was purchased in the mid-90s and demolished to make room for the current church parking lot. The adjacent Van Wert St. property housing the former county health department was acquired in 1997 and refurbished in the early 2000s as the HOPE building.
In November of 2023, the congregation unanimously voted to leave the UMC and was renamed, once again, to Buchanan Methodist Church.
